Reaction to Guidry Commentary on Houston Mayor Parker
by David Murphy
Tuesday, June 05, 2012

Jim:

I read your commentary on Annise Parker/Houston with great interest. Commentary

I have to agree that Annise Parker has and is doing a very good job as Mayor of Houston.

As you mentioned,  the red light cameras were rather embarrassing for the City and regardless of the need for drainage improvements the drainage fee was a huge mistake.  As a property owner, I was certainly misled as to the scope and size of the fee.  I also would like to know more about the City budget and what has happened to the tax dollars that should also be spent on drainage mitigation.

Those issues aside there are many more positives taking place.  My hope is that she will continue to work on the pension issues with City employees and find a resolution that is fair, but not a windfall for the employees.

Your comments on institutional memory were accurate.  Elected officials should not be in career positions, but the lack of time often gives the bureaucrats too much influence over City policy.

That said the voters in Houston, with few exceptions, are electing responsible people to council, with most carrying out their work in a responsible manner.
