RULES OF THE ROAD PROGRAM SLATED FOR AUG. 25
Lakewood Yacht Club’s Captain’s Roundtable Chairman Gene Harris has announced that Capt. Stephen Polk will present a program concerning “Rules of the Road” in relationship to dealing with commercial traffic on the waterways.
The program will be held on Sat., Aug. 25, 9 am to 11 am in Lakewood Yacht Club’s ballroom, 2425 NASA Parkway, Seabrook. The program is free and open to the public. All boaters and non-boaters are invited; Lakewood will provide refreshments.
Capt. Polk supervises Seaman’s Church Institute’s (SCI) Center for Maritime Education. Before joining SCI, he was a Senior Port Captain for Kirby Inland Marine, LP and managed several types of inland towing vessels in the Canal Division. He is a certified Crew Endurance Management System expert and holds a U.S. Coast Guard 3rd Mate Unlimited Tonnage, Oceans License.
“Capt. Polk’s discussion of the effect of the large ships now being utilized in the ship channel is scary, “explained Harris. “Presently, both the speed and the size of the ships impact not only the channel but Galveston Bay itself.”
Once the ship channel has been dredged and completed, the new larger ships which will travel through the Panama Canal in 2014 will further impact the bay. These effects will be felt by commercial vessels as well as pleasure craft.
Please RSVP for this program at 281-474-2511 so that Lakewood Yacht Club will be prepared to properly serve the attendees.
