DPS DWI Enforcement Gets Drunk Drivers Off Roads During July 4th Holiday

AUSTIN – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers made more than 1,200 DWI arrests during a nine-day special enforcement period, including the July 4th holiday.  The targeted DWI enforcement took place from June 30 – July 8 and included additional patrol hours funded by a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) grant.

“DWI enforcement by our State Troopers made Texas roads safer and undoubtedly saved lives during this year’s July 4th holiday,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “We are grateful for the men and women of our Texas Highway Patrol who work every day to keep our communities safe.”

DPS Highway Patrol troopers made 1,262 DWI arrests during the July 4th enforcement effort, and 361 of those arrests were a direct result of the increased patrols. The TxDOT grant allowed increased patrols in high-risk locations during the times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent.

DPS enforcement also resulted in nearly 13,700 speeding citations, more than 2,200 seat belt/child safety seat citations, 695 fugitive arrests, and 499 felony arrests during this time period.
