UHD Brings World-Renowned Nuclear Physicist to Houston
to Establish Research-Based Student Exchange Program

HOUSTON – The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) will bring one of the world’s leading nuclear physicists to Houston this Friday, Aug. 3 to share his research and establish a research-based student exchange program between UHD and the Royal Institute of Technology (RIT) in Stockholm, Sweden.

Waclaw Gudowski, Ph.D., a professor of neutron and reactor physics at RIT, will address students, faculty and the public in a presentation entitled, “From Nuclear Science to Non-Proliferation Diplomacy Policy and Back: Experiences from the International Science and Technology Center in Moscow.”

Dr. Gudowski also serves as head of the Reactor Physics Group and director of the Nuclear Energy Technology Centre (CEKERT) at RIT and deputy executive director of the International Science and Technology Centre in Moscow. He is the author of more than 70 scientific papers in nuclear technology and solid state physics.

Janusz Grebowicz, Ph.D., an associate professor of chemistry and physics at UHD, met Dr. Gudowski at the International Congress on Nuclear Energy and was instrumental in establishing the university’s partnership with RIT, as well as creating the shared student exchange program. Dr. Gudowski’s research – which includes the environmental and geological impacts of nuclear waste – complements Dr. Grebowicz’s research on the thermal properties of rocks.

“It is a true privilege to host Dr. Gudowski on our UHD campus, as he is a global leader in the field of nuclear physics,” said Dr. Grebowicz. “While several of our undergraduates will get the opportunity to study with him in Sweden, this special presentation will allow our other science and technology students to learn about this dynamic industry and his groundbreaking research first-hand.”

Dr. Gudowski’s presentation is co-sponsored by UHD’s Department of Natural Sciences and Scholars Academy, an academically competitive program in the College of Sciences and Technology that promotes student success for undergraduates studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
