GALVESTON'S GRAND 1894 OPERA HOUSE PRESENTS
“AN EVENING WITH JOEL GREY”
GALVESTON ISLAND, TEXAS - The Stars Shine for You at The Grand! The Grand 1894 Opera House opens its 2012-2013 Performing Arts Season on Saturday, September 29th at 8pm with internationally-acclaimed entertainer, Joel Grey. Sponsored by The Houston Chronicle, Joel Grey will kick off a star-studded season at The Grand.
Stage and screen actor, singer, and dancer, this “wicked-ly” talented winner of Oscar, Golden Globe, and Tony awards adds pizzazz to any Broadway show – from George M. Cohan (George M!) to the Master of Ceremonies (Cabaret); from “Mr. Cellophane” in Chicago and the wizard in Wicked to Moonfaced Martin in the recent revival of Anything Goes. Appearing at The Grand for one stellar performance only, Grey is a totally endearing showman who will win your heart!
Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, Grey was exposed to some of the best comical and musical performers in the business. His father, Mickey Katz was a performer/producer of nightclub, resort, and Broadway satirical revues. Making show business his business – starting at just 10 years old, Grey quickly became an accomplished singer, dancer, and photographer, yet was virtually an unknown until being cast to MC a show called Cabaret. And the rest -as they say…is history.
His unpredictable but dazzling performance in Cabaret created a Broadway icon. From that role, Grey won a Tony Award. From that honor, other roles – showcasing his talents for singing, dancing, and acting – led to an Oscar, Academy Award and BAFTA Award ("The Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles"). He is just one of eight people who have won both a Tony and an Academy Award for the same role.
Grey’s presence is not only felt on stage in front of live audiences, but for portraying a variety of characters on television. He appeared as a panelist for the television game show "What's My Line?” and was also the first mystery guest during its syndication. Some may also remember him as the “devil” in the final episode of the TV series “Dallas” and as an aging rebel seeking to free his wife from prison in Star Trek: Voyager.
More recently, Joel Grey returned to Broadway in 2011 as “Moonfaced “Martin in the revival of Anything Goes and also directed the Broadway premiere of The Normal Heart. September 29th will be an opening night at The Grand you won’t want to miss!
