THE GRAND 1894 OPERA HOUSE PRESENTS ENCORE PERFORMANCE
OF ROBERT EARL KEEN, SATURDAY, AUGUST 25th
GALVESTON ISLAND - The Grand 1894 Opera House will present “a hearty serving of Lone Star musical cuisine” when one of The Grand’s favorite performers – Robert Earl Keen – returns again in concert Saturday, August 25th, at 8pm. Over the last decade, Keen has performed four times at The Grand and no matter how many times you’ve been in the audience… you are sure to want to be back again to enjoy outstanding evening of great music.
Keen is well-known for his talent of striking a unique balance between sensitive story-portraits – e.g. “Merry Christmas from the Family” and raucous barroom fun, as well as showcasing his emotional poignant ruminations with such favorites as “I’m Coming Home”. As a singer/songwriter Robert Earl Keen has built a reputation “as one of the nation’s finest musical storytellers, who has been guided by several self-imposed rules and traditions that are often the antithesis of music industry standards.” Indeed – for over three decades - this formula has worked well for him and has certainly paved the way for a generation of songwriters and performers who make a living on the road. More importantly, this Americana music pioneer is separated from other songwriters because he matches his lyrical literature with irresistible melodies – resulting in music that attracts “thinkers and dancers alike.” Keen’s fans portray a cross section of music lovers devoted not only to his traditional – and alternative country hits – but to his folk, blues, rock, and Americana songs as well.
Keen grew up in Houston and graduated from Texas A&M University where he learned to read and write music. And much to his credit, he became friends with his neighbor Lyle Lovett while attending Texas A&M in College Station. This friendship inspired Keen to pursue a career in music and to relocate to Austin – “The Live Music Capital of the World”. Keen’s career took off immediately, and he quickly became known as “one of the most entertaining performers on the roadhouse circuit.”
His popularity and talent are also recognized by his peers –as such acclaimed entertainers as Willie Nelson, George Strait, Johnny Cash, Lyle Lovett, and others have chosen to record Keen’s songs over the years. Another testament to his popularity and talent is the fact that Keen and his entire band have stayed intact and performed together for almost two decades –i.e. his band has performed with him on every album since 1997’s Picnic.
You won’t want to miss this incredibly-talented performer as he sings songs from his latest release Ready for Confetti as well as longtime, legendary favorites such as “The Road Goes On Forever” and “Feelin’ Good Again.”
