Houston-Galveston Area Council Board of Directors
by Jim Guidry
Tuesday, November 18, 2014

The Houston-Galveston Area Council Board of Directors today voted unanimously to authorize a first year funding agreement with Gulf Coast Center for the Victory Lakes Commuter and Transit Service pilot project at a cost not to exceed $325,128. Listen (1:16)

“This service has already been operating in the area and it has been very successful,” said Shelley Whitworth, program manager for the Commute Solutions Programs. “In fact, it’s been standing room only and there have been times when they had to leave riders at the park and ride lot.”

Several people signed up to discuss a proposed change in the beneficiary policy for the council of government’s retirement plan to provide for same sex spouses, which was tabled last month; but the item was not on the agenda for action at today’s meeting.

“After consulting with our attorneys we’ve determined that this item should be held until we have obtained legal clarity on that,” said H-GAC Chair Pasadena City Council Member Darrell Morrison.

Those who spoke thanked the board for the delay, but promised a larger turnout at the next meeting if the item comes up for consideration then. Listen (9:19)

“We particularly thank Galveston County Commissioner Ken Clark on his bold and principled stand in bringing this to the light,” Welch said.

H-GAC Executive Director Jack Steele reviewed the proposed 2015 Budget and Service Plan.

The budget and service plan will be on Wednesday’s agenda for action at the December meeting.

Morrison presented a certificate of appreciation to League City Council Member Heidi Thiess for her service on the board.  The resolution had been approved at last month's meeting.

All other agenda items were approved unanimously. Attendance  Agenda (The agenda includes links to staff reports and additional audio excerpts.)

Steele announced that next month's meeting will be held in a newly remodeled meeting room on the second floor of the building at 3555 Timmons Lane.
