Covestro’s CEO Inspires STEM Students from 10 Greater Baytown Area Schools
in Motivational Speech

Covestro’s CEO Patrick Thomas spoke to more than 800 students from Goose Creek CISD, Barbers Hill ISD and Lee College encouraging students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

“In Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, you can really change people’s lives,” Thomas said, citing an example of the use of Covestro products in technology to help a man walk for the first time in 30 years with exoskeletal robotics tuned into the man’s nervous system and brain waves.

He also talked about Covestro’s most advanced materials being used in Solar Impulse, a solar-powered airplane attempting the first round-the-world solar flight demonstrating that pioneering spirit and clean technologies can change the world.

With the advances in technology already in place, “just imagine what you will be doing in your careers 20 years from now,” Thomas said to the group of students from four area high schools, five junior high schools and Lee College.

“This unique chance for our students to hear the CEO of a global company speak passionately about his own interest in and experiences with STEM undoubtedly furthered their own desire to explore opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math,” said Randal O’Brien, Goose Creek CISD Superintendent. “That Mr. Thomas is CEO of a respected company in our own backyard that is heavily invested in our schools makes his message all that more appealing to our students.”

With a rich tradition of good corporate citizenship, Covestro’s vision to make the world a brighter place aims to spark curiosity, to envision what could be and to help create it.

“We need to inspire these young people because we need them in the future to provide innovation in our business,” Thomas said.  “Maybe the future head of our business is sitting in the audience today and is inspired to think about a future career in engineering.”

Students were given the opportunity to ask the CEO questions ranging from applications of polyurethane in second skin products to the use of insulation from the solar-powered plane for application in homes.

“The questions were brilliant. They were inspiring questions,” Thomas said. “It just shows the insight some of these young people have into our business and understanding human needs satisfied through innovation and science.

Rod Herrick, Vice President and Site Manager at Covestro Industrial Park Baytown, said being an active member of the community is a fundamental value of the company.

“It’s always great to give back to our community, especially in the area where we operate in like with Goose Creek CISD and Barbers Hill,” Herrick said. “We are fortunate to be able to bring the innovation and excitement of our company to hundreds of area students in hopes of inspiring them for a bright future.”
