The Houston-Galveston Area Council Board of Directors today voted 24-4, with Houston Vice Mayor Pro Tem Jerry Davis, League City Mayor Pro Tem Geri Bentley, Manvel Mayor Delores Martin and Bellaire City Council Member Pat McLaughlan opposed, to find the Olshan Landfill Mining Facility consistent with the goals and objectives of H-GAC's regional solid waste management plan. The site is located in southwest Houston, approximately 2.38 miles northwest of the intersection of the Southwest Freeway and the Sam Houston Parkway.
“There appears to be, in my thought process, a major problem with removing a landfill,” said McLaughlan, adding that it is unknown what the landfill contains. Listen (7:32)
The board voted unanimously to enter into an agreement with CJ Hench & Associates, Inc. to conduct traffic counts and vehicle classifications in the Houston-Galveston Regional Transportation Area.
The board voted unanimously to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute to update the regional Intelligent Transportation Systems Architecture and develop a set of system engineering templates for local agencies to use in the development of their federally funded ITS projects.
The board voted unanimously to approve the appointments of Gary M. Scoggin to the Regional Air Quality Planning Advisory Committee and Fay Watson to the Solid Waste Management Committee with Andrew Miller as alternate.
The board voted unanimously to give Executive Director Jack Steele a 3 percent increase in salary. (Correct)
