Senator Miles Files Legislation to Increase Job Opportunities for HUBs
SB 794 and 795 to increase business opportunities and grants to minority-owned businesses
AUSTIN- Senator Borris L. Miles filed a legislative package to increase business opportunities and grant awards for Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs). Senator Royce West (D-Dallas) joins as co-author of the legislation.
"Texas is over 60% minority, but the business opportunities do not reflect the population, and that's a problem that needs to be addressed," said Senator Miles. "SB 794 and 795 will increase opportunities for minority owned businesses and hold the state accountable when awarding these funds.
SB 794 would require the annual report for the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) to include the number of grants awarded to HUBs. The TEF was created in 2003 to attract new businesses to relocate to Texas. SB 795 would update the rules regarding the TEF and ensure grant funds awarded to HUBs would be distributed in the same proportion as government contracts.
"Bottom line, this legislation will create jobs and ensure that minority owned businesses receive a fair share of the opportunities. If Texas is going to be progressive and forward thinking, we cannot continue this disparity between minority businesses and grant funding, " said Senator Miles.
