Lakewood Yacht Club Prepares for Blessing of the Fleet

Seabrook, Texas -  Lakewood's Annual Blessing of the 2017 Fleet is scheduled for Sunday, March 19. This traditional naval ceremony dates back thousands of years and is still recognized as a way to formally bless vessels.

"It's a fun event for captain, crew, and guests," says Fleet Captain Rex Bettis. "In keeping with tradition, members are cleaning up their boats and will "Dress Ship" with festive flags, ribbons and flowers."

Lakewood members are encouraged to participate whether they want to bless a new boat, an existing vessel not yet christened or re-christen their boat.

Traditional bagpipers and an award-winning marching band will entertain as retired Reverend Harold Travis of Clear Lake Methodist Church, entreats safety and good fortune upon the entire LYC fleet.

"Our club runs full-throttle most of the year, but the annual Blessing of the Fleet is among the major occasions of the year," says Commodore Jim Winton. "Our member volunteers and staff work tirelessly to ensure that it's always an exciting and event-filled weekend."

Blessing participants are officially welcomed into the fleet, and they receive a commemorative plaque, the trademark Lakewood burgee and a bottle of champagne to "bathe the bow."

Friends and family are invited to attend and are encouraged to dress for the occasion. Ladies are likely shopping for classy nautical attire, while men will pull out their classic white slacks and dark blazers.

The Lakewood Clubhouse and grounds will be decorated for the occasion and will play host to an assortment of functions and social gatherings for members and guests to choose from including a poolside soiree, champagne brunch and a "Tour de Fleet' after the blessing.

The blessing will start at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 19th. For more information, contact the LYC Harbor Administrator at or 281-474-2511.
