Cornyn Honors Texas Independence Day
WASHINGTON – Today on the Senate floor, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) honored the 181st anniversary of Texas independence Day. Excerpts of Sen. Cornyn’s remarks are below, and video of his remarks can be found here.
“Today is Texas Independence Day, a day that inspires pride and gratitude in the hearts of all 28 million Texans.”
“Today commemorates the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence, when Texas declared itself a Republic and independent from the nation of Mexico. And here in the Senate, we remember the sacrifice of those who came before us and laid the foundation for our state by reading a letter written by William Barrett Travis, a defender at the Alamo."
“I want to express my gratitude for these Texas patriots, many of whom would later serve in the United States Congress, including Sam Houston, whose Senate seat I'm honored to now occupy.”
Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, is a member of the Senate Finance, Intelligence, and Judiciary Committees.
