NEW LASER VISION CORRECTION PROCEDURE GETS START IN TEXAS GULF COAST
HARRIS & GALVESTON COUNTIES – On Wednesday, March 1, 2017, the FDA approved the Zeiss VisuMax® laser to commercially perform “flapless” laser vision correction, and one local ophthalmologist will be among the first to perform the surgery in Texas.
Dr. Bernard Milstein, the first ophthalmologist in Texas to perform excimer laser refractive surgery using an FDA approved laser in 1991, will also perform the first commercial ReLEx® SMILE procedure. With over 700,000 procedures performed in 62 countries since 2011, ReLEx® SMILE is a proven laser vision correction procedure with demonstrated safety and effectiveness.
The “Small Incision Lenticule Extraction” surgery corrects nearsightedness by removing a thin, microscopic, lens-like disc of corneal tissue from within the cornea, thereby changing the shape of the cornea to afford clear distance vision. Unlike traditional laser vision correction, the ReLEx® SMILE procedure does not involve the creation of a flap, and no corneal tissue is ablated.
“We are so pleased to be able to offer not only Bladeless All-Laser LASIK, but also ReLEx® SMILE Bladeless Flapless Laser Vision Correction for those people who might benefit from lapless vision correction treatment to see clearly at distance,” Dr. Milstein says.
“ReLEx® SMILE will also be useful for anyone with dry eyes or corneal surface problems. And, there is no down-time for patients who play sports.
Good candidates for the ReLEx® SMIILE procedure are: corrected for nearsightedness; in good general health; enjoying stable vision for more than six months; at least 20 years old; not diabetic; not pregnant ; and not suffering from an auto-immune condition.
“For some patients, LASIK will still be the best option,” Dr. Milstein says.
Dr. Milstein has practiced ophthalmology at The Eye Clinic of Texas since 1972. He specializes in cataract surgery, refractive lens surgery, and LASIK laser vision correction. As an investigator in the original FDA studies for the excimer laser for the treatment of myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia, he was the first ophthalmologist in Texas approved to perform refractive surgery using an FDA excimer laser. Dr. Milstein also was among the first doctors in the country to implant the ReSTOR® multifocal lens, an intraocular lens implant designed to allow patients to see near, intermediate and distance ranges of vision without the need for glasses after cataract surgery.
Dr. Milstein is a fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a past president of the Texas Ophthalmological Association, and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Additionally, he was chairman of the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Clinical Committee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He has appeared on countless local and national newscasts and is often consulted by attorneys and journalists as an expert in the field of ophthalmology.
