GALVESTON’S SPRING CITYWIDE CLEANUP SET FOR APRIL 2017
GALVESTON, Texas – Spring has arrived and now is the perfect time to clean sweep Galveston Island! The City has multiple cleanup events throughout the month of April scheduled as well as everyday practices each resident can take advantage of to create a greener, cleaner Galveston
A great time to finish your spring cleaning with a little help from the City!
Island. These events are open to all Galveston residents; simply present a current City of
Galveston utility bill (no copies please!) confirming you pay for City refuse service and a photo ID to participate!
The Citywide Cleanup April 2017 dates have been set for Friday and Saturday, April 7th and 8th, for
51st Street west to Point San Luis AND Friday and Saturday, April 14th and 15th, for 51st Street to
the East End. Residents are encouraged to place materials next to their garbage carts by 7 AM on the collection days scheduled for their area. Please note the City will suspend bulk trash collection
beginning Monday, April 3rd, and will resume Monday, April 17th.
Please ensure large bulk piles or any other items requiring use of the litter truck are not placed under low hanging wires/branches or over your meter. Any material not picked up on Friday or Saturday will be collected on the regularly scheduled garbage day.

APPLIANCE DISPOSAL, NEWSPAPER, GLASS, AND MORE RECYCLED AT THE CITY’S RECYCLING CENTER!
All white goods and appliances, including those without Freon and compressors, may be dropped off at the City’s Recycling Center all month long! Newspapers, glass, plastic, tires (up to five), cardboard, and Styrofoam are also accepted. Convenient after hours drop off bins are located outside of the facility’s entrance. If you have paint to dispose of, open the can, fill with kitty litter, sand or sawdust and leave the lid off the can. When it has completely dried up, set out the can without the lid and the City will pick it up.
Each Saturday in April, the Recycling Center will host a variety of events. The Recycling Center,
located at 702 61st Street, will be available for item drop-off from 8 AM to 4:45 PM unless
otherwise noted as follows:
Mulch Give-A-Way – April 1st
On Saturday, April 1st, residents may stop by the City’s Recycling Center and pick-up FREE
Oil and Tire Collection – April 8th
On Saturday, April 8th, the City’s Recycling Center will accept up to 5 tires of any size or type at
no charge to the resident AND up to 10 gallons of some oil! Please remember a current utility
bill must be presented. The City will accept all oils listed that are properly containerized:
cooking oil, motor oils, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, antifreeze, diesel,
and used gas.
Mulch Give-A-Way & White Goods Collection – April 15th
On Saturday, April 15th, residents may stop by the City’s Recycling Center and pick-up FREE
mulch! They will also be accepting any white goods you may need to dispose of including
refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, and dishwashers.
Fluorescent Bulbs and Textiles – April 22nd
On Saturday, April 22nd, residents may drop-off fluorescent light bulbs that are less than four
feet in length and any old textiles like clothing, blankets, towels, or rags that are beyond re-use
at the City’s Recycling Center.
E-Waste Collection – April 29th
On Saturday, April 29th, the City’s Recycling Center will accept televisions (CRT and flat
screens), computers and components, fax and copy machines, printers, toners and ink cartridges,
cell phones, telephone equipment, stereos, DVD and CD players, video games, audio and visual
equipment, microwaves and more.
Paper Shred Day – June 3rd from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Recycling Center, April 8th from
9am to 2pm at Gulf Greyhound Park
Due to the availability of the shredder we will not be able to host a shred day during the
Citywide Cleanup month, however, we do have the truck reserved for June 3, 2017. Those
interested in can attend the Galveston County Household Hazardous Waste Day on April 8th
from 9am to 2pm at the Gulf Greyhound Event Center at 1000 FM 2004 Lamarque, TX 77568
where they will offer shredding. Residents can bring up to 7 tons of paper material. Items that
cannot be accepted for shredding include: binders, binder clips, wet paper, hard drives, cdd's,
video tapes, or film reels, boxes.
PUBLIC WORKS NEEDS YOUR HELP TO CLEANUP GALVESTON!
In an effort to keep Galveston free of litter, the Public Works Department would like to remind
Galvestonians of 4 simple steps to keep our island clean:
1. Bag your trash – to avoid loose litter on the streets, the City encourages residents to bag all
trash before placing it in your trash cart. This significantly helps to prevent loose trash on the
streets during pick-up.
2. Correct cart placement – please ensure that your trash carts are clear of vehicles and easily
accessible for Public Works crews to empty.
3. Keep alleys clear – on trash pick-up days, please remove all vehicles from alleys or ensure
that they don’t impede the progress of Public Works crews.
4. Remove your carts – per City ordinance, carts should be removed from the street by 10 PM
on collection days.
DROP DEBRIS LOADS FOR FREE AT THE TRANSFER STATION ALL APRIL LONG!
From April 1st through April 30th, there will be no charge at the Transfer Station for residential
customers. Residents must present a current City of Galveston utility bill confirming they pay for city
refuse service as well as photo ID; copies of utility bills will not be accepted. Residents must be present at the drop off. The Transfer Station’s hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM and Saturday from 8 AM to 3 PM at 5515 Harborside Drive. (Please note Saturday hours are being extended for April 8th and April 15th, 2017 only).
The Transfer Station does NOT accept the following items:
• Appliances with
• Liquids of any kind
• Air conditioners
• Any material with
• Fire extinguishers
• Any flammable
