Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, in a news conference held today, announced that he has nominated Dr. Karun Sreerama as Director of Public Works and Lisa Johnson as Interim Director of Parks and Recreation.

Sreerama has practiced as an engineer for more than 27 years, and has worked on projects across the United States and the world, including in Eastern Europe and South America. He holds four post-graduate degrees. Turner also noted that Sreerama will be the first Asian department director in the city's history. Listen (22:04)

“It's nothing more than the highest honor for me to be appointed to this position,” Sreerama said, promising to make the Public Works Department seamless and transparent.

He succeeds Dale Rudick, who is retiring from his position at the city effective April 3.

Johnson has served 30 years in the public sector in parks and recreation activities. She has worked for the City of Houston since 2002.

Johnson will serve in the interim effective April 30, following the retirement of Parks and Recreation Director Joe Turner.

Both appointments are pending council approval. News Release
