Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce recognizes “Outstanding Texas Women”
The Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce presented the 10th Annual Conference for Women on Thursday, April 6 at the Moody Gardens Convention Center on Galveston Island.
The day-long conference featured prominent speakers, demonstrations and a shopping expo.
The stated goal of the conference for the past ten years has been to educate, inspire and empower women. The theme for this year’s event was “Texas”. The 2017 keynote speaker was actor, author, activist Marilu Henner.
Chamber chair C.B. “Bix” Rathburn, PhD and Chamber president Gina M. Spagnola welcomed the attendees and introduced the mistress of ceremonies, Mia Gradney of KHOU TV.
UTMB Galveston played a major role in offering expert speakers on a wide range of subjects. Kelly T Dineley, PhD spole on “Mindful Aging: Lifestyle Choices to Reduce Dementia Risk”. Karen Spurgeon Welch, MD, ABFM delivered “Rx for a Healthier, Happier Inner You” and Andrea Wirt, MSN, RN discussed the issue of “Caring for Aging Parents: Challenges”.
There were also women who spoke on the work of organizations they lead. Connie Watt, mother of football standout J.J.Watt and his brothers who are also star athletes, spoke about balancing a busy life and giving back to the community.
Susan Peters, known for her leadership in the fight against human trafficking, gave an inspiring invitation to the audience to get involved with “Igniting Hope: The Fight Against Human Trafficking in Texas”
Attendees were encouraged to exercise between speakers by fitness enthusiasts Teri Tillotson, Kathy South, Jill Lawhorn and Le Bergin.
During lunch attendees were introduced to women chosen by the conference committee to be recognized as “Outstanding Texas Women”. Keynote speaker Marilu Henner discussed strategies to live a healthy lifestyle and introduced her latest book on the subject. A book signing event followed.
''This year proceeds from the conference are dedicated to the American Heart Association and Salvation Army.
