Victory Institute to Train Texas LGBTQ Leaders to Run for Office
at Houston Leadership Summit on April 22

Summit to include LGBTQ Texas elected officials; former Houston Mayor Annise Parker to participate

Houston – This Saturday, Victory Institute and Texas Equality will train dozens of LGBTQ Texas leaders on how to run for office and advance equality for LGBTQ people in the state. Participants will hear from four openly LGBTQ elected officials and other leaders at the Houston Leadership Summit, so they are best equipped for the realities of running for office as an openly LGBTQ person in the state.

Victory Institute chose Texas to hold the Leadership Summit because of the recent spike in anti-LGBTQ legislation in the state, as well as the potential to make meaningful change if more LGBTQ people are elected to the state legislature and other offices. Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker is among the many panelists who will encourage LGBTQ people to run.

Two sessions of the full-day Houston Leadership Summit are open to the press:

1:45 pm – 2:30 pm: A panel discussion on how Houston LGBTQ leaders continue to fight for equality post-HERO. Panelist include Melanie Pang, Co-Chair, Mayor’s LGBTQ Advisory Committee; Tammi Wallace, Co-Founder/Co-Chair, Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce; Jessica Zyrie, Community Outreach Specialist, Bee Busy Wellness Center; and Mike Webb, President, Delta Phi Upsilon Houston Chapter.

3:30 pm – 4:15 pm: A panel discussion of current and former LGBTQ elected leaders and their experience in running for office. Panelists include former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, State Rep. Celia Israel, Houston Council Member Mike Laster, and Judge Steven Kirkland of Harris County. Victory Institute President & CEO Aisha C. Moodie Mills will moderate the panel
