The City’s Intermodal Transportation Committee Organizes Bike to Work Day & Bike
as a Family Day on May 19th and May 20th

GALVESTON, Texas – With spring in the air, an abundance of sunshine, and miles of bike paths throughout the City of Galveston, Bike Month could not have fallen on better weather for cyclists on the island. In an effort to encourage ridership during the month of May, the City’s Intermodal Transportation Committee has organized a “Bike to Work” event on May 19th and a “Bike as a Family” event on May 20th.

With expansions to the bicycle network, both planned and under construction, now is a perfect time for Galvestonians to embrace the sport. “The new additions to the bike system on the island will make cycling in Galveston even more enjoyable,” said the City’s new Director of Development Services Tim Tietjens, “As an experienced rider who has been recently introduced to the existing bike network on the island, I hope that Galvestonians can see the treasure that lies before them and take the opportunity to get out and enjoy it.”

The City’s Intermodal Transportation Committee has put together two community events to celebrate cycling on the island during Bike Month.

  • Bike to Work – Friday, May 19th from 11:30a to 1:00p – Cycle to work and join us downtown at the he Galveston Historical Foundation's Hendley Green for lunch on the strand. We will have fruit and water at Hendley Green for riders and plan to take a group photo of participants at noon.
  • Bike as a Family – Saturday, May 20th from 10:30a to 1:00p - Using the new bike lanes, this activity will take families from the Seawall to downtown via 19th Street. Families will meet at 10:30a for a group photo at 19th and Seawall on the beach side. From there riders will ride as a group to Hendley Green, located at 21st and Strand. There will be a short presentation of the proclamation, handouts of the bike/trial network map, and a quick invitation for the community to get more involved in the City’s Intermodal Transportation Committee and the League of American Bicyclists "Bike Friendly Community Program". There will be snacks and water available for participants at this event as well.

  • Always wear a helmet to protect your head in the event of a crash
  • Ride in the right-most lane that goes in the direction that you are travelling
  • Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and lane markings
  • Look before you change lanes or signal a turn; indicate your intention, then act
