Congressman Al Green's Statement Concerning the Financial Services Committee’s Intent to Control (Secret) Congressional Records

(Houston, TX) -- On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, Congressman Al Green (TX-9) released a statement concerning the Financial Services Committee’s Intent to Control (Secret) Congressional Records.

“Since the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) was passed in 1967, the public has been able to obtain federal documents and review correspondence between federal agencies as well as Congress.

“Consistent with President Trump’s refusal to be transparent about his taxes, Republicans are changing a transparency rule. They now want emails previously subject to the FOIA to be secreted. During President Obama’s Administration, the Chairman of the Financial Services Committee did not hesitate to request mountains of documents from federal agencies under the committee’s jurisdiction. We must maintain transparency and not change standards when there is a change of administrations. Transparency engenders accountability. If we have nothing to secret and want accountability, we must have transparency.”
