Local Students Win Congressional Art Competition

Washington, D.C. –  Students from James E. Taylor and Episcopal High Schools won the top honors at this year’s Congressional Art Competition hosted by Congressman John Culberson (TX-07).

“The submissions we received this year are excellent,” said Congressman Culberson at a ceremony held for the finalists in his Houston office. “Our office received almost 50 different entries from six different schools in Houston and today we have the opportunity to recognize and honor their talent. These young artists are talented and have a great future ahead of them.”

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent. Students from each congressional district in America submit their work to their Representative’s office, and panels of local artists select the winning entries.

This year, the first place award went to Ana Laura Olvera for her oil painting, “Racing the Storm”. Her artwork will be displayed for one year at the United States Capitol.

Second place went to Sydney Bosarge for her digital photographic print entitled, “Where the Wind Takes You”.

Third place went to Yvonne Kim for her water color and prima pencil piece, “Out to Pasture”.

Ana Laura Olver and Yvonne Kim are both students at James E. Taylor High school and Sydney Bosarge attends Episcopal High School.

Since the competition was launched in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students across the nation have participated in the annual event.
