COUNTY MUSEUM TO HOST LORA-MARIE BERNARD

Join the Brazoria County Historical Museum on Thursday, May 25, at 6:30 p.m., as it hosts author Lora-Marie Bernard for her book The Counterfeit Prince of Old Texas: Swindling Slaver Monroe Edwards.  Limited quantities of the book will be available for sale at the Museum that evening.  Admission to the program is free.  For more information, telephone (979) 864-1208 or visit the Museum’s website at www.bchm.org.

Lora-Marie Bernard will discuss her book, The Counterfeit Prince of Old Texas: Swindling Slaver Monroe Edwards. The captivation of Bernard’s book lies in the time in which Monroe Edwards lived and the lives he impacted. Edwards was one of the most famous criminals in the 19th century.

Born in Kentucky in 1808, Edwards lived in New Orleans and later settled in Texas while it was still a Mexican colony. He obtained a large land grant in Brazoria County, calling his property Chenango Plantation. Edwards rubbed shoulders with many of Texas most impressive founders, even being arrested and imprisoned at Anahuac with William Travis in 1832. Edwards became an international forger who created a lucrative slave-smuggling market, and almost swindled America’s First New York investment bank. Eventually, he was sentenced to Sing Sing Prison in New York where he died. Edwards was an iconic figure. His charm and good looks gave the appearance of a true southern gentleman; instead, he was the consummate fraud.

Mostly forgotten today, Edwards is brought back to life by Bernard.
