Galveston Arts Center (GAC) presents three exhibitions opening Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM with artist talks beginning at 6:30 PM. In the downstairs main gallery, Robert Hodge and Tierney Malone present Two & 1/2 Years: A Visual Celebration to the Spirit of Juneteenth, an exhibition reexamining the the institution of slavery in Texas. In the upstairs 1878 and Brown Foundation Galleries, the exhibition SALT by the Houston-based artist collective ROUX, includes print based works by Rabéa Ballin, Ann Johnson, Delita Martin, and Lovie Olivia in conjunction with PrintHouston. These exhibitions will remain on view through July 9, 2017.

Two & 1/2 Years: A Visual Celebration to the Spirit of Juneteenth is a collaboration between multidisciplinary artists Tierney Malone and Robert Hodge. The story of the institution of slavery in Texas and the origins of the Juneteenth celebration are reexamined and retold both musically and visually. The exhibition is a visual representation of the music project Two & 1/2 Years: A Musical Celebration to the Spirit of Juneteenth produced by Robert Hodge and Tierney Malone and released June 19, 2016.

The Houston-based artist collective ROUX includes Rabéa Ballin, Ann Johnson, Delita Martin, and Lovie Olivia. Their works navigate between styles of the past and the proposed future, and address experiences unique to women of color residing in the American South. These four artists not only embrace and challenge drawing conventions in medium, surface, and concept, but apply unusual approaches to the process and ingredients of printmaking, installation, video, sculpture, and painting. This exhibition is presented in conjunction with PrintHouston, a biennial celebration of original prints at galleries and museums throughout the region.

The galleries and the ArtWorks Museum Store are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Admission is free at all times.

GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which takes place every six weeks in downtown Galveston. The ArtWalk brochure, which lists participating venues, hours, information and map can be downloaded at
