2017 exciting year for Ronald McDonald House of Galveston
by Jerry Mohn
Sunday, May 14, 2017

A message from Jerry Mohn, president of the board of directors:

2017 will be an exciting year for the Ronald McDonald House of Galveston. Our House opened in May of 1989 and has served well over 19,000 children but the salt climate, wear and tear has taken its toll, and now the original part of the house is in need of a complete makeover and renovation, inside and outside.  In order to accomplish this, the House is shutting down at the end of March for 3 to 4 months.  We will say goodbye to our last guest families on March 24th and spend a week getting the house ready for the repair work to begin.  When complete, the rooms will be secure from water and wind and have a new HVAC system. If you have visited the House, you know that most of the guest bedrooms, the schoolroom and other public rooms in the original structure are colorfully decorated for the children.  Many have incredible murals and we will do everything possible to preserve the paintings but if it is necessary to cut through wallboard, we will work with our wonderful donors and their artists to restore the rooms to their previous glory.

Our generous partners, Valero and Marathon are already made commitments for new furniture and accessories for all 20-guest bedrooms.  Additionally, Moody Foundation has graciously provided us with a much-needed 15-passenger van and Bush & Associates has provided additional funds to support the operation of the van.

The Ronald McDonald House of Galveston runs on love, volunteers, an incredible staff and the financial support of literally thousands of donors.  Your continuing financial support is critical.  Our annual budget is nearly $1,000,000.  That’s one million dollars!  While McDonalds and the Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities are very supportive of our house, they provide less than 10% of our annual operating funds. I urge you to join me in helping this important organization that is a “home away from home” for families of children being treated at the University of Texas Medical Branch, the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, and the Transitional Learning Center. The Ronald McDonald House of Galveston is more than an alternative to an isolated hotel room. Our house is a home where children and families enjoy cheerful surroundings and the support of other families, staff and volunteers while they are often facing life altering medical challenges.  It is truly the “House that Love Built”.

We have a new presentation that we would like to share with the community. We want to let people and organizations know about this valuable asset.  Hard to believe but not everyone knows about the Ronald McDonald House in Galveston!  We want to reach out to all of Galveston County.  If you belong to an organization, we would love to share our story with the membership.

Please call me or our Executive Director, Margie Chavarria, to set up a date for a presentation.
