First Dual Language Class Ready to Graduate

They made history as kindergartners in the 2004-2005 school year, and thirteen years later they will come back together again to mark a new chapter in their lives as the first graduating class of the Clear Creek Independent School District’s Dual-Language Program. “The Dual Language Program not only honors the home language of the children but enriches their lives by bringing two different worlds together and broadens their horizons” said Michael Marquez, principal of McWhirter Elementary which is home to the first two-way immersion program in CCISD.

The program began with eighteen students, nine Spanish speaking students from McWhirter Elementary and nine English speaking students from other elementary schools across the district who transferred to McWhirter. Through the district’s partnership with the University of Houston, Clear Lake, students were fully immersed in Spanish and English with the end goal of becoming bilingual, bi-literate, and bi-cultural by the end of 5th grade. Little did this first cohort know at the time, their success has led to the expansion of the program through intermediate school and now offered at three additional elementary schools.

“The advantages of the Dual Language Program are many and invaluable,” said Marquez, principal of McWhirter Elementary. “As students share with each other in the same classroom to become proficient in Spanish and English, they are also exposed to unique experiences that allow them to become bi-cultural and bi-literate.”

CCISD is honoring the first Dual Language graduating class on Friday May 19, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at McWhirter Elementary located at 300 Pennsylvania, Webster, TX 77598. For more information about the Dual Language Program, please visit:
