Update: Coast Guard ends search for two people

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard ended its search for two people in the water north of Mobile Bay, Alabama, after their bodies were recovered Thursday.

Daphne Search and Rescue’s dive team located the bodies of Leo and Frank Scott and transferred them to shore where they were positively identified as the missing individuals.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday from a mariner who witnessed his 52-year-old male cousin and 82-year-old uncle not resurface after falling overboard. Searches were conducted by Coast Guard assets until both men were identified Thursday.

"We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the Scott family. One of our main missions is ensuring the safety of our mariners, and we regret outcomes like this. We would like to remind everyone that the Coast Guard always encourages the wearing of life jackets, regardless of weather," said Capt. Joseph Snowden, commander, Sector Mobile.

Involved in the search were:

  • Coast Guard Station Dauphin Island 29-foot Response Boat-Small boat crew

  • Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew

  • Mobile Police Department marine unit

  • 3 Daphne Search and Rescue vessels
