Thursday, April 19, 2018

Darrell JohnDarrell John’s CD release party on Wednesday evening held at Yaga's on the Strand in Galveston attracted a large gathering of his admiring fans from his early years as a musician with Moody Methodist Church in the late 1970’s and newly acquired fans who have eagerly anticipated the release of his CD. Darrell is both a singer and song writer living in Galveston.

“I’ve been waiting for over 30 years for him to do this CD,” commented one of his fans who came all the way from Houston for the release party. Another fan added, “It’s about time he got this CD out!”

“It’s All I Can Do” is a collection of songs mostly about love inspired by his wife of 30 years. “Susan has been the inspiration for most of my songs,” Darrell said.  The couple met while John was performing. “I first saw Darrell at the Holiday Inn on Seawall and fell in love with his music,” commented Susan.

Driving or riding as a passenger seems to be another source of creative inspiration for John as reported by the artist's family and friends. “My dad was always singing when we were driving,” explained his son, Daniel. “He’d come up with his own song as we were riding in the car.”

“Don’t Let Love Behind the Wheel” a title on the CD came to him as he was rolling over a rumble strip. “I just built the rest of the song from the title,” Darrell explained.

“I Need a Vacation” was a real crowd pleaser bringing out smiles and heads nodding in agreement with the idea of a vacation.

Beginning his music career at the young age of 6, Darrell played the piano, guitar and sang for church congregations, family members, and friends. His natural talent and love of music were driving forces in his early adult life as he performed with various bands. His first album was released in 1978.

With more than a decade of performing under his belt, raising a family took priority and Darrell turned his energies into providing video recording services to the Galveston community. Then, after close to a three -decade hiatus, he was prompted by friends and family to get back out and honor his fans with live performances.

It was 2017 when Joe Beck, a Nashville producer heard Darrell’s lyrics and encouraged him to get to Nashville for a recording session. Johnl traveled to Nashville for three recording sessions to complete “It’s All I Can Do” with Joe Beck as the producer.

Darrell ended his release party performing his song “We Need More Angels Down Here on the Ground” A piece he dedicated to the people who are coping with the destructive forces of Hurricane Harvey and those continuing to struggle with Hurricane Ike recovery.
