Lone Star College students awarded prestigious scholarships

HOUSTON (May 7, 2018) – The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation awarded Lone Star College students Michael Aguilar and Anthony D’Souza its Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, making it possible for them to complete their bachelor’s degrees at a selective four-year college or university. 

“We are very proud of these Lone Star College students,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation awarded scholarships to 47 deserving students nationwide this year, so to have two selected from Lone Star College is quite an accomplishment.” 

Each will receive up to $40,000 per year to cover a significant share of educational expenses including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees. In addition to the monetary award, these recipients will receive all-inclusive educational advising from foundation staff to guide them through the processes of transitioning to a four-year school and preparing for their careers. In addition, they will also be eligible to apply for $50,000 annually for graduate school. 

Anthony D’Souza“I applied for the Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship due to its national prominence and its potential to sustain and empower the pursuit of my academic ambitions into the next chapter of my life,” said D’Souza, LSC-University Park student, who is majoring in Physics/Astronomy. “In the future I hope to work as an astrophysicist at NASA or a research institution.” 

“Anthony represents such a wonderful success story,” said Shah Ardalan, Ed.D., LSC-University Park president. “Our faculty and staff are passionate about student success and Anthony is a great example of their commitment.”

Michael AguilarAguilar, LSC-CyFair student, who is majoring in Mathematics and Economics. “Fortunately, Lone Star College-CyFair has an abundance of resources. My goal after finishing my bachelor’s degree is to pursue a graduate degree at a top research institution.”  

Aguilar holds a 4.0 GPA and was the first Hispanic student to be the keynote speaker at the American Association of Community College President’s Breakfast, an event held in conjunction with the group’s annual convention.  

“Michael’s many accomplishments are so impressive,” said Seelpa Keshvala, Ph.D., LSC-CyFair president. “In addition to earning this esteemed scholarship, Michael was also named the 2018 Distinguished Regional Office Award by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and was one of 20 students nationwide to become a member of the 2018 All-USA Academic Team.” 

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is dedicated to advancing the education of exceptionally promising students who have financial need. Since 2000, the foundation has awarded $175 million in scholarships to more than 2,300 students from eighth grade through graduate school, along with comprehensive counseling and other support services.
