News Release
Friday, May 11, 2018

A remembrance of every Galveston County service member who has died in combat will be observed during a Memorial Day observance at College of the Mainland on Thursday, May 24.

The names of each Galveston County man who died during combat while defending the United States will be read aloud during the Memorial Day Remembrance ceremony at the college. A total of 306 names will be read.

Those who died served our country during World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and the war of terror in Iraq and Afghanistan and represent the Army, Marines, Air Force and Navy.

“We have researched the national archives as well as military organizations to identify those from Galveston County,” said Joel Camacho, a Veteran Academic Advisor at the college who also is a retired from the U.S. Army.

A red, white and blue wreath will be on display as well as a pair of combat boots and helmet.

The College of the Mainland has a Center for Veteran Success to help veterans and their families utilize educational benefits from the Veterans Administration as well as the state Hazlewood Act which allow educational benefits to be passed down to veteran’s children.

The community is invited to attend the ceremony scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. behind the Administration Building on campus at 1200 Amburn Road. Lunch will be provided.
