Jefferson County
HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
News Release
Tuesday, May 15, 2018

As a homeowner you are entitled to a General Residence Homestead Exemption provided by Tax Code §11.13 (a) and (b). You may qualify if (1) you owned this property on January 1; (2) you occupied it as your principal residence on January 1; and (3) you and your spouse do not claim a residence homestead exemption on any other property. This exemption is obtained through the Jefferson Central Appraisal District at no cost to the property owner.

Taxpayers in Jefferson County may receive a Jefferson Designation of Homestead Request Form being mailed by a private company. This allows a property owner, for a fee, to designate their property as a “homestead.” This has nothing to do with the Homestead Exemption you receive through the Jefferson Central Appraisal District.

For questions, taxpayers may call the County Tax Office at 835-8516.
