Galveston Arts Center Announces New Executive Director
News Release
Wednesday, May 16, 2018

Galveston Arts Center (GAC) announces the appointment of new Executive Director Lisa Shaw.  She succeeds the tenure of Interim Executive Director Joanna Bremer, under whose guidance GAC has thrived in the past 13 months.

After an extensive search, the GAC Board of Directors chose Shaw to take the helm and help usher in a new era for the organization.  No stranger to Galveston, she began her career as an intern for the American Undersea Warfare Center at Seawolf Park, where she eventually became Museum Director.  Shaw has spent the past three years as Associate Museum Director for the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, TX.

“After her recent marriage, Shaw was looking to relocate to the area and GAC is more than happy to bring her aboard based on her ambitious record of museum management and her desire to focus on philanthropy,” said Doug McLean, president of the GAC board.  Shaw said her goals are to help broaden GAC’s reputation as a leading contemporary arts space throughout the state and build its relationship with the Galveston community. In addition to its long history of excellent exhibitions of work by Texas and regional artists, GAC has education and outreach programs, such as Art For All, which provides free arts education and therapy to health services agencies in Galveston, and after-school art-making activities in four island schools.

“Galveston Arts Center would like to thank Jo Bremer for her stellar work generating grant income and as temporary leader,“ said McLean.  “Her efforts stabilized the organization, and her guidance and support encouraged and inspired the GAC staff, who now feel ready and empowered to continue their efforts.”

GAC is the organizer of ArtWalk, which celebrates new artists and exhibitions every six weeks in downtown Galveston. The ArtWalk brochure, which lists participating venues, hours, information, and map at www.galvestonartscenter.org. The galleries and the ArtWorks Museum Store are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Admission is free at all times.
