Coast Guard kicks off National Safe Boating week
News Release
Thursday, May 17, 2018

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard kicks off National Safe Boating Week, an annual observance to promote safe and responsible boating and the value of voluntary, consistent life jacket wear by recreational boaters, Saturday.

National Safe Boating Week runs from May 19-25, is the launch of the 2018 North American Safe Boating Campaign, and is endorsed and promoted by the U.S. Coast Guard.

As part of National Safe Boating Week, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will hold several voluntary vessel safety check events to ensure boaters' vessels meet the minimum safety standards and that in an emergency, boaters have the necessary equipment to save lives and request help. To schedule a vessel safety check, visit the United States Coast Guard Mobil app.

For more information on boating safety, please visit the U.S. Coast Guard's Boating Safety Division at USCGBoating.org; or the National Safe Boating Council at SafeBoatingCouncil.org. The U.S. Coast Guard also has a mobile app that provides the essential services and information most commonly requested by boaters. For more information, visit USCG.mil/mobile.

Coast Guard subject matter experts will be available for interviews throughout the week to discuss Safe Boating Week and safe boating practices.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers National Water Safety Program and the Corps of Engineers Natural Resources and Education Foundation have also launched Social Media Channels on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for a Life Jackets Worn, Nobody Mourns Campaign. On these channels, you will find daily posts that include important water safety information that can easily be shared to promote playing it safe when in, on, or near the water.
