Charges Filed In 2017 League City Murder Case
News Release
Wednesday, June 13, 2018

On July 23, 2017, League City resident Clarence James Humphrey was shot and killed in a failed robbery attempt that occurred in front of the League City house where he was staying. The four males suspected in the shooting left the scene before police arrived. While processing the scene, evidence technicians collected and then submitted several critical pieces of evidence to the Texas Department of Public Safety crime lab.

The four suspects remained at large as detectives investigated the case. On April 24, 2018, armed with DNA evidence collected at the scene, a 1st Degree Murder warrant was issued for 30-year-old John Wells of Houston. The DNA evidence placed Wells at the scene of the crime at the time of the shooting. Wells was served with the warrant on May 22, 2018, in the Harris County Jail, where he was being held on unrelated charges.

League City Police Department continues to investigate this case in an attempt to identify the remaining suspects.

The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office set Wells’ bond at $300,000.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact League City Detective Austin Frakes at 281-554-1865.
