Higher Education
ACC Grant to Enhance Respiratory Care Program
News Release
Wednesday, June 13, 2018

One of the most important goals for any higher education program is to ensure that they prepare students for the technology and procedures they will experience in the workforce.

The Alvin Community College Respiratory Care program recently received a $1,600 Innovative Initiative grant from the ACC Foundation to purchase subscriptions for software to simulate electronic medical records.

“This grant will help provide an important electronic records component for our program,” said Marby McKinney, ACC Respiratory Care director.

The Innovative Initiative Grants were awarded to eleven projects this spring. They are designed to encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative approaches to fulfill the mission of the college. The grants will be used for the 2017-18 academic year.

As medical professionals continue to further implement information to improve patient care, navigating electronic patient records has become a necessary skill.

With the grant, the Respiratory Care Department will purchase software subscriptions for a program called Neehr Perfect that will provide students with a modifiable database of patient records.

“We have been using high fidelity mannequins to simulate realism for patient care and it would be an amazing component to add the realism of patient medical records that matches the scenario,” McKinney said.

Students have previously used paper records in the simulation but they will have to utilize electronic record management in the workforce, she said.

“This program will allow students a simulated electronic medical records environment to learn these skills,” McKinney said.

The Neehr Perfect program will be implemented in Respiratory Care courses starting in the Fall.

The Foundation issued $12,290 in Innovative Initiative grants this year.
