ACC Grant to Improve Campus Landscaping
Press Release
Thursday, June 21, 2018

ACC FoundationIt is important to maintain the visual representation of a college campus that students can take pride in and Alvin Community College staff members are volunteering to do just that.

The ACC Foundation recently awarded a $1,000 Innovative Initiative grant to Admissions and Records clerk Cindy Iszard to set up a landscape improvement program for the campus.

“I’m honored to be entrusted with the enhancement of ACC’s landscaping,” she said.

The Innovative Initiative Grants were awarded to eleven projects this spring. They are designed to encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative approaches to fulfill the mission of the college. The grants will be used for the 2017-18 academic year.

Iszard said the ACC campus has always been a beautiful place to work. But after Hurricane Harvey hit the region and the following cold winter, slight improvements are needed.

“The lawns are always beautiful and the live oaks create a welcoming feel,” she said. “The beds just needed to be revitalized with a little bit of clean up and added color to complete the look.”

Volunteers from the college staff have already put in two days of work since the grant was awarded.

The funds will go towards the purchase of supplies for the improvement projects including mulch, planting soil, plants and more.

The color and texture of the plants were chosen specifically for the regional climate of South Texas.

Volunteers with the staff will make the improvements between June 2018 to February 2019 that include sprucing up flower beds, removing dead flora, replacing soil and adding mulch where needed.

“With the help of several people, this project is well on its way,” Iszard said. “Visual representation affects campus morale for faculty, staff and students alike. ACC has a beautiful template to provide eye-catching colors and textures in the campus’ surroundings.”

The Foundation issued $12,290 in Innovative Initiative grants this year.
