ACC Receives Extension on Wagner-Peyser Grant
News Release
Thursday, June 28, 2018

Alvin Community College received a $398,758 grant from the Texas Talent Connection program to improve instruction for co-requisite developmental courses

The grant award is the second to ACC from the Wagner-Peyser  program. ACC was one of 13 Texas colleges to receive grant funds.

“Texas leads the nation in private-sector job creation because of our highly skilled workforce,” said Governor Gregg Abbott in a release. “When we asked Texas employers what the most important factor is for future job growth and business expansion, the top answer is continued access to a skilled and flexible workforce. With the $5 million in Texas Talent Connection grants announced today, we are connecting more Texans to in-demand skills training and connecting more employers to work-ready skilled Texans, so they can grow even more good-paying jobs in the Lone Star State.”

A $249,000 annual Wagner-Peyser grant was awarded to ACC in 2017 from the Texas Workforce Commission specifically to improve developmental Math. The second grant award will assist ACC in meeting legislative requirements to shift developmental Math and English courses into a co-requisite model.

“The new project will allow ACC to expand contextualized, co-requisite courses in mathematics and develop an ESL Bridge program leading to co-requisite courses in English for those students completing the bridge classes,” ACC grant coordinator Gayland Capps said.

The grant project will be implemented from  July 2018 through June 2019. For more information, visit http://gov.texas.gov/organization/twic
