ACC Regents Approve Resolution for Tax Notes
News Release
Monday, July 02, 2018

The Alvin Community College Board of Regents voted unanimously during their meeting on June 28 to pursue the issuance of maintenance tax notes for making improvements to campus infrastructure.

Regent Cheryl Knape was not present.

The proposed $25 million in tax notes will fund upgrades to aging infrastructure on campus including the replacement of water lines, roof repairs, HVAC equipment, electrical and more. Many of the facilities on the ACC campus are more than 50 years old and are in need of improvements to critical systems.

Over the past year, the campus has faced numerous issues that have caused classes to be cancelled or moved to alternate locations. Those problems have included gas leaks, equipment failure, chiller malfunction, and plumbing issues.

One such leak earlier in the year caused concern over the safety of the drinking water. Some of the issues have also caused injuries to students and staff.

The board will vote to issue the tax notes during its meeting on Thursday, August 16. The amount of tax notes issued may be adjusted before approval.

In other action, regents approved the purchase of $109,250 in IT infrastructure upgrades with DataVox, Inc. which will be funded by General Service fees.

The board also:

-approved transfer of $100,000 in scholarships from business office to the ACC Foundation

-approved hiring of instructors in Biology, Math and English

-approved contracts for faculty and staff

-received presentation on 2018-19 budget

-approved fee change for ACC Lab School and Police Academy shooting range

-received the 2015-18 Junior College Audit Report

-adopted changes to Board Operating Procedures

-approved adjustment to 2017-18 budget

-approved monthly financial reports

The board will have its next meeting on Thursday, July 26 at 6 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center.
