Washington D.C.
News Release
Friday, July 06, 2018

Washington D.C. - On Thursday, July 5, 2018, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) released nearly $4 billion for construction of a levee system from Sabine Pass to Galveston Bay. This project is part of the USACE’s Long Term Disaster Relief Investment Plan and provides for a segment of the greater coastal barrier protection system. The segment targeted by these funds is located along the coast of the 14th Congressional District, represented by Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood). Following the announcement, Congressman Weber released the following statement:

“I am thrilled the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers allocated nearly $4 billion for this segment of the critically important coastal barrier protection system.  This disaster mitigation effort will both protect the citizens of the Texas Gulf Coast, and it will help minimize the negative effects of disasters, like Hurricane Harvey, which have a ripple effect throughout the country.

“The levee system will help protect our homes, neighbors, and communities from the threat of quick-rising water that has caused damage one too many times. Additionally, the Texas Gulf Coast plays a leading role in the region and for our nation in terms of economic contributions. When our refineries, pipelines, and seaports along the upper Texas Gulf Coast are disrupted by natural disasters, the entire nation sees the affects.

“Though there is still work to be done, today’s announcement is a great one and should be celebrated! I look forward to working closely with USACE as we work to complete this segment of coastal barrier protection.”
