UHCL offers early childhood education master’s fully online
News Release
Monday, July 09, 2018

HOUSTON — University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Early Childhood Education Master of Science has been available to educational professionals for years, but starting fall 2018, the degree will become available fully online, to help busy education professionals maintain their employment while advancing their career.

“The face-to-face degree will remain available and is unchanged. The online version is a mirror version of that degree,” said Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education Shanna Graves. “All the courses are available online, including the electives and the capstone project.”

A capstone project is a multifaceted assignment that serves as a culminating intellectual experience for students, typically at the end of an academic program. With the early childhood degree, students have options for their capstone experience—they can choose to complete a 160-hour practicum internship or complete a master’s thesis.

Graves said that professionals who have a teaching certificate and wish to obtain an advanced degree as well as professionals working in early childhood careers in the private sector that don’t require certification but wish to have an advanced degree could benefit. “There are some individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in another field but wish to get a master’s in childhood education,” she said. “We’ve had a number of students enroll in this program who have degrees in other fields who are career-changers.”

Graves said the degree required only 36 credit hours to complete. “It’s possible to finish in under two years,” she said. “The quality of the classes is as excellent as always, but there are many people who just can’t make it to campus. This online degree makes advancement possible for everyone, regardless of their location. The program is flexible and students can work at their own pace.”

The face-to-face version of this degree plan has received recognition from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the most prestigious and desired recognition in the field.
