August 30 deadline set for registration for FREE LIT HVAC training course
News Release
Monday, August 27, 2018

BEAUMONT - Displaced workers from Hurricane Harvey who live in Jefferson County have only three more days to register for a free training course in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) at Lamar Institute of Technology.

The training is being offered Sept. 4th-Oct. 4th through a $123,200, state-funded National Dislocated Worker Disaster Grant and the Texas Workforce Commission. About 260 workers will benefit from these free opportunities. Only 20 seats are available for the HVAC course.

Also being offered Sept. 17th-20th is a free “Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30” course. Applicants have until Sept. 7th to register for the OSHA 30 class. Only 10 seats are open. Additional short-term, fast-track courses will be offered later in the plumbing and electrical fields, according to Dr. Byron Prince, LIT Harvey Grant Manager for Workforce Education.

The OSHA 30 course introduces occupational safety and health, teaching how to recognize, avoid and prevent workplace hazards. It will also provide information on workers' rights, employer responsibilities and how to file a complaint. The classes emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention. Those successfully completing the course will receive a Department of Labor (DOL) 30 hour card.

This displaced worker program—the first of its kind—will be working closely with local industries to help them recruit local workers, Prince said. Those wanting to register should contact or call 1-877-834-Jobs (5627). After registering with TWS, OSHA course applicants can register here: HVAC candidates can register here:
