HFT: Superintendent Search Must Be Rigorous and Transparent
News Release
Tuesday, September 04, 2018

HOUSTON — Statement by Zeph Capo, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers, on the HFT executive board’s unanimous position that the Houston school board should hire a search firm for a new Houston Independent School District superintendent:

“The Houston Federation of Teachers supports a school board motion to hire an outside firm to conduct a rigorous and transparent search for a school superintendent. A wide net should be cast to find a leader with the knowledge and skills to provide Houston’s diverse student population the well-rounded, well-funded education they need to succeed.

“As interim superintendent, Dr. Grenita Lathan has earned the right to compete for the job as part of a thorough search that ultimately selects a candidate who wants to collaborate with teachers and community members on the critical decisions that will make a difference in the lives of every Houston student.”

Statement by Jackie Anderson, HFT secretary-treasurer:

“The HFT held numerous community meetings across Houston over the past two years about what families want in a new superintendent. Among the issues voiced repeatedly were a need for equitable school funding; more community schools with wraparound services; and incentives to recruit and retain teachers, such as ending top-down management style, developing an improved evaluation system and supporting better salaries. A sincere and rigorous search would include asking all candidates about their thoughts on these and other issues that are on the minds of Houstonians.”
