Washington D.C.
Culberson Praises Department of Education’s Federal Aid for Houston Institutions of Higher Education
News Release
Friday, September 07, 2018

Washington, D.C. – Recently, the U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced more than $63 million in new federal assistance for 47 institutions of higher education under the Emergency Assistance to Institutions of Higher Education program. The program provides funding to institutions and their students in areas directly affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, or Maria or the 2017 California wildfires.

“I thank the Department of Education for this federal support, and I’m pleased the West Loop, Gulfton Center, and Katy campuses of Houston Community College have been awarded these funds to support their continued recovery after Hurricane Harvey,” said Congressman Culberson (TX-07). “These funds will go a long way in helping these District Seven students return to normal as they pursue their dreams and build their futures.”

Congress appropriated $100 million for this program, and funds are available until 2022. The funding allocations were determined according to the damage and recovery costs incurred by each institution following the disaster. Students who are homeless or at risk of homelessness received priority.

"This emergency assistance will provide vital resources to those in Houston and Texas whose lives were impacted by Hurricane Harvey in 2017," said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. "As those on the ground work every day to recover, the Department of Education will continue to be a partner and resource to get institutions, students and faculty back on their feet."

Congress also appropriated up to $75 million for the Defraying Costs of Enrolling Displaced Students program, which helps institutions recover the costs of generously supporting students who were displaced by the disasters.  To date, $5,384,186 has been awarded, and the Department will evaluate all additional applications through October 31, 2018.
