Galveston City Council, during its workshop today, received and discussed an update on the Pelican Island Bridge.

Mayor Jim Yarbrough said that he and City Manager Brian Maxwell spoke with the Texas Department of Transportation. The agency is looking for a local sponsor for the bridge, Mayor Yarbrough stated. Listen (26:11)

“(TxDOT) needs somebody to contract with and be a partner with on the (advanced funding agreement),” the mayor explained.

The Galveston County Navigation District vacated its sponsorship of the bridge.

Mayor Yarbrough added that the bridge project is in the neighborhood of $90 million, with nearly half of the amount coming from TxDOT.

The city council also discussed the Tourist Mobility & Parking Plan and the Economic Development Plan, as well as an ordinance pertaining to “vulnerable road users.”
