Program pays community groups nominal fees to mow lots

The City of Houston Department of Neighborhoods (DON) and Keep Houston Beautiful (KHB) invite nonprofit organizations to join the Mow-Down Program to help tackle the problem of overgrown abandoned lots in city neighborhoods.
The program encourages nonprofits to partner with the city to manage overgrown lots by offering participating groups modest fees of $50 to $100 per mowing. The mowing projects contribute to the city’s efforts to address safety concerns posed by overgrown abandoned properties, while improving the neighborhood appearance and helping build community pride.
How the Program Works
Properties approved under the program are located throughout the city. Enlisted groups are assigned to approved properties of their choice in their own neighborhoods or other areas of the city. The first mowing is carried out by city crews to ensure the clearing of weeds and debris for the safety of program participants. After the first cut, the participating groups assume the responsibility of maintaining the lots. The program pays participating groups a fee of $50 to $100 for each mowing upon verification that the work has been completed. KHB provides access to tools and supplies for the mowing projects as needed.
Active nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) certification and civic associations are eligible to apply for participation in the program.
