Gulf Coast Big Brothers Big Sisters held their 33rd annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake kick-off luncheon on Thursday. The Honorable Jim Schweitzer, Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2, Galveston County, as well as Moody Bank, were honored for their years of support of the organization dedicated to mentoring youth. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a national organization which matches qualified adults with children who need an adult mentor in their lives.
D’Lorah Berry, GCBBBS board president, welcomed the attendees. The invocation and pledge to the American flag were led by Reverend Bert Bagley.
Bob Senter, GCBBBS board past president, introduced the guests of honor and recognized two Big Brothers: Carlos Caldera and Gerson Bloom, for mentoring over 20 young people during their years as volunteers. Two of their Little Brothers, who are now grown men, spoke to the audience, sharing the positive difference having a Big Brother has made in their lives.
The crowd laughed as Judge Schweitzer explained in his remarks that he had been allocated 20 minutes to speak, but on the advice of his wife, Lisa, he would keep his comments brief. Moody Bank President, Victor Pierson also spoke briefly, reinforcing Schweitzer’s message and the importance of the community supporting initiatives that invest in the futures of young people.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake will be held at the AMC Star Lanes in Texas City on Friday, October 5th 6:00pm-8:00pm and Sunday, October 7th 1:00pm-3:00pm. Participate and donate at http://mentorsgc.org/events/bowl-for-kids-sake/
