Road closures announced for weekend events

The Shrimp Festival will be held Friday and Saturday on a stretch of The Strand. The Island Girl Triathlon will be held Sunday at Moody Gardens. Both events necessitate some road closures and lane modifications

Galveston, Texas – Two isle events happening this weekend will cause road closures and lane modifications in the City. 

The ninth annual Galveston Island Shrimp Festival will be held downtown on Friday and Saturday. Please anticipate the following road closures from 6:00 a.m., Friday, Sept. 28 to 9:00 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29:

  • Strand from 22nd to 24th streets
  • 23rd Street from Harborside Drive to Mechanic Street

The fourth annual Island Girl Triathlon will be held at Moody Gardens from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m on Sunday, Sept. 30. The swimming and running portions of the triathlon will take place on Moody Gardens’ property.

To accommodate the bicycle portion of the triathlon, the following lane adjustments and road closures are anticipated from about 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Sunday:

  • Stewart Road from 83rd Street to 7 ½ Mile Road (lanes modified with cones; traffic still permitted both directions)
  • 83rd Street from Stewart Road to Piper Street (temporary road closure)
  • Piper from 83rd to Lockheed Road (temporary road closure)
  • Lockheed Road from Piper Street to Moody Gardens (temporary road closure)

 Galveston police officers will be working this event, and traffic personnel will also be on hand to assist. There will be directional signage in the area, and the closures will immediately reopen once the last bicycle has cleared. More information on the event can be found here:
