Pasadena City Council, in a special meeting on Tuesday, voted 6-2, with Don Harrison and Sammy Casados opposed, to approve the adoption, on first reading, of a property tax rate of $0.615446 per $100 valuation for the 2018 Tax Year.

The rate reflects a 10.61 percent increase compared to the 2017 property tax rate of $0.575388 per $100 valuation.

Several council members spoke on the tax rate. Harrison stated he opposed the process, arguing that the city had not been transparent in considering the tax rate and budget. Casados again discussed the city's recent Industrial District Agreements, stating that the agreements provided a “tax cut” to businesses in the district. Listen (16:29)

Other council members pointed out that the additional revenues would fund the addition of 20 police cadets, as well as a 3 percent pay increase for all employees. Council members also noted that the city's tax rate was still lower than that of many other area cities.

No other action items were on the agenda. Council Member Cody Ray Wheeler was absent. Agenda
