HFT Supports Proposition B for First-Responder Pay Parity
News Release
Friday, October 12, 2018

HOUSTON — Statement by Zeph Capo, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers, on the HFT executive board’s vote to support Proposition B, which would provide Houston firefighters pay parity with the city’s police officers:

“Houston shouldn’t pit firefighters against police officers. All of our first responders should be valued equally with competitive wages and better working conditions. Firefighters have been leaving our city in droves because of inferior compensation. Proposition B will help recruit and retain top firefighters by paying equivalent wages to those of police officers. Educators know that to attract and keep top talent, competitive compensation is essential. If Proposition B passes, Houston would be following the lead of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and San Antonio. Achieving pay parity for first responders could be spread over multiple budget cycles so that the additional expense wouldn’t endanger funding for other city programs and staff.”

Statement by Patrick M. “Marty” Lancton, president of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association:

“Houston firefighters are grateful for the support of teachers. We appreciate that they are taking a stand in support of firefighters. They see that voting ‘yes’ for Proposition B will help take the politics out of public safety in Houston.”
