HOUSTON,– It’s time to put on your dancing shoes and support a good cause as local non-profit Halo House hosts its 8th annual gala “Reach for the Stars” Saturday, November 10, 2018. This year’s event will once again be held downtown at the beautiful Ballroom at Bayou Place from 6 to 11 p.m. and will feature one of the best live and silent auctions in town, dinner, and music from the David Caceres Band. This year’s honoree is longtime Halo House supporter Nicholas O’Kane, Macquarie’s head of commodity markets and finance.

Halo House has much to celebrate at this year’s gala, including the construction of their new building that is scheduled to open by June 2019, and a generous $2 million donation from Be The Match®, an organization that works globally to provide a cure for patients battling blood cancers and other blood disorders.

Halo House’s new facility will allow them to triple the number of cancer patients they are able to serve and the Be The Match donation will help to ensure that their doors remain open well into the future.  Proceeds of this year’s paddle raise will be used to help provide transportation for patients and caregivers from Halo House back and forth to the Texas Medical Center as parking often costs as much as $20 per day.

Halo House executive director and co-founder Kathleen Fowler said, “People often don’t think of the impact months of housing and transportation costs have on families already struggling with the costs of cancer treatment.”

She went on to say that, “As an organization Halo House will continue to aim high, ‘Reach for the Stars’ and  provide clean, affordable housing for the cancer patients we serve.”

If you’d like to attend Halo House’s Reach for the Stars gala or for more information on making a donation, visit or call 713-665-8852.

Halo House is a 501 (c3) public charity founded in 2009 by MD Anderson Cancer Center oncologist Dr. Nathan Fowler and his mother, retired business owner Kathleen Fowler. Their vision is that one day no one battling the blood cancers leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma will have to worry about where they are going to live during treatment in Houston or going bankrupt while paying for living, eating, and parking expenses here and their rent or mortgage back home.

At only $20 per day, Halo House apartments are substantially lower than area hotels, which average $120 - $229/night.

Since opening the doors to its first two apartments in 2011, Halo House has expanded to 11 apartments with an average wait of about three months before a Halo House apartment becomes available.  To date Halo House has served over 320 families and provided over 21,000 days of housing.
