Culberson Celebrates Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Youth Mentoring Program in Houston
News Release
Saturday, October 20, 2018

Houston – On Friday, Congressman John Culberson (TX-07), Chairman of the Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittee on Appropriations (CJS), attended Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston’s Big Picture Luncheon to celebrate how the organization’s one-to-one mentoring program is creating positive change for kids in Houston.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston has been a bright spot in our community for the last 68 years, and it reminds me that one of the greatest joys in life is to help someone else,” said Rep. Culberson. “As the Appropriator for Southeast Texas and Chairman of the Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittee on Appropriations (CJS), I support significant investments in peer-to-peer mentoring programs. In fact, I have raised funding for youth mentoring programs to $100 million, well above the president’s budget request. I will continue to make youth mentoring programs a priority as I work on finalizing my 2019 CJS bill.”

As the Chairman of the Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittee on Appropriations (CJS), Rep. Culberson is responsible for funding the Department of Justice (DOJ), which oversees programs for underserved and at-risk youths to increase mentorship opportunities and to improve the quality and impact of the mentoring they receive.

Earlier this year, Rep. Culberson increased the funding for youth mentoring programs to $94 million in his CJS bill. The funding increase ensures the DOJ can continue to award grants to groups, like Big Brothers Big Sisters, who support high quality mentoring for youth.

It also funds research to improve mentoring strategies and to provide training and technical assistance to those who receive grants. The 2018 CJS bill was signed into law as part of the omnibus funding bill on March 23, 2018.
