Brazoria County
Brazoria County Coalition Takes Action towards Safe Disposal of Drugs
News Release
Monday, October 22, 2018

According to the Center for Disease Control, more than 40 people die daily nationwide from opioid overdoses (including prescription drugs). As this epidemic rises and reaches our local communities, healthcare practitioners and researchers alike are working diligently to identify the most effective methods to prevent and reduce both opioid abuse and unintentional overdose deaths.

Locally, Brazoria County Community Coalition’s (BCCC) Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force continues to work on various strategies for proper disposal for prescription drugs in cities across Brazoria County with a goal of reducing access to youth and potential abuse and overdose of these substances.

BCCC and its key partners are hosting Prescription Drug (RX) Take Back Day scheduled for Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. RX Take Back Day is a national initiative in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration and local agencies to encourage citizens to turn in unwanted or expired medications for safe disposal at collection sites across the country. In April 2018, numerous RX take back sites were hosted throughout the county collecting nearly 1,500 pounds of medication.

The upcoming RX Take Back Day on Saturday, October 27, 2018, includes five drop off locations in Brazoria County: Stella Roberts Recycling Center, 5800 Magnolia, Pearland – Reflection Bay Park @ Shadow Creek, 12115 South Clear Lake Loop – Manvel Police Department, 6615 N Masters (CR 1128), Manvel – Richwood Police Department, 1800 North Brazosport Blvd., Richwood – Alvin Police Department, 1500 South Gordon St., Alvin.

For additional access, there are eight permanent RX dropbox locations at the following: Alvin Police Department, 1500 South Gordon Street, Alvin, TX 77511 Drop Box located in lobby (Open 24/7)  - Angleton Police Department, 104 Cannan Drive, Angleton, TX 77515 Drop Box located in lobby (Open 24/7)  - Clute Police Department 104 East Main, Clute, TX 77531 Drop Box located in lobby (Open 24/7) - Freeport Police Department, 430 North Brazosport Blvd., Freeport, TX 77541 Drop Box located in lobby (Open 24/7) - Iowa Colony Police Department 12003 CR 65, Rosharon, TX 77583 (Open Mon-Thurs 8am-5pm), Lake Jackson Police Department 5 Oak Drive, Lake Jackson, TX 77566 Drop Slot located in lobby (Open 24/7) - Richwood Police Department,1800 North Brazosport Blvd, Richwood, TX  Drop Box located in lobby (Open 24/7) - Sweeny Police Department, 123 North Oak, Sweeny, TX 77480 Drop Box located in the lobby.

“We are so grateful for our continued community partnerships that are willing to host these collection sites as it is another layer of prevention for the communities we serve to be safer and healthier” said Dannielle Meyer, Coalition Coordinator of the Brazoria County Community Coalition.

There is no single solution to the disposal of the billions of drugs in America’s medicine cabinets. However, Brazoria County Community Coalition continues to develop its own answers and be part of the solution. The Coalition continues its mission of reducing the illegal and harmful consequences of alcohol and other drugs including prescription drugs in youth and families and is part of the Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol, a nonprofit working to help individuals, families and communities stop alcohol and drug abuse and addiction.

To get involved and be a part of the solution, contact Dannielle Meyer, Coalition Coordinator, Brazoria County Community Coalition: dannielle.meyer@bacoda.org and join in the efforts of the Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force.
